Black Beauty – TaylorMade P790 iron

TaylorMade’s P790 irons have taken the golfing world by storm. Combining power and precision with sleek looks, they’ve proven a smash hit with players of all ability levels. And now their renowned aesthetic has a new dimension with the powerful looking, limited edition all-Black finish version that features a special Black Dynamic Gold 105 shaft and Black and Orange Golf Pride grip to match the head.

The P790 irons have been designed to offer a combination not usually seen in golf irons – forged irons that go a mile! The incredible look of these irons behind the ball is matched only by the power that they generate and the confidence they give you to go out and attack the course. As TaylorMade put it – “this beauty is a beast!” Worldwide Golf headed down to The Track Meydan Golf to speak to eGolf Megastore’s custom-fit specialist, Regardt Van Rooyen, about why you should enter the dark side and consider a set of these distinctive irons.

“The P790 Chrome has been dominating player’s bags for a while now so there’s no doubt that this new limited edition all-black version is going to be a hit as we know it performs unbelievably,” says Van Rooyen. “TaylorMade has released these irons in a high gloss PVD finish and they look incredibly sexy! They have new all-black True Temper Dynamic Gold 105 shafts to create a sleek, unified look that inspires and intimidates and with the black grip it gives it all stealth-like look.

“For a distinctive finishing touch, TaylorMade use a splash of red to enhance the screw and back of the grip, which looks cool. If you’re going to choose the black P790 over the chrome P790 it’s going to cost you a bit more, so is it worth it? Absolutely.”

Look and feel

TaylorMade say the P790 has the look and feel of a players’ iron, and to be fair when you put it down at address it does look special with a larger than average blade size throughout the set. It’s remarkable how they can create such a forgiving club that looks this eye-catching and sleek.

Tech talk

SpeedFoam Technology, high COR and sound
One of the keys to the product is the use of SpeedFoam Technology, which is in the core of the iron and improves the sound and feel, while supporting the explosive face. The use of SpeedFoam has allowed TaylorMade to develop their thinnest player’s iron face ever.

Thin forged inverted cone face (1.75mm)
The P790 also features an ultra-thin 1.75mm face thickness with re-engineered Inverted Cone Technology optimised for the slightly smaller face area. This creates higher ball speeds that translates into more distance.

Tungsten weighting (3i-7i)
Inside the 3 to 7 irons is a high-density tungsten weight at the back of the bottom of the cavity to increase the MOI.

Speed Pocket
The WrapFace construction creates a cut-thru Speed Pocket on the sole with extreme flexibility in the lower part of the clubface. This is what gives the P790 irons their flexibility and forgiveness that you experience with this distance iron.
