LIV Golf rebel Henrik Stenson has become the latest player to resign their DP World Tour membership.
The 2016 Open Champion joins the likes of Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia in officially quitting the European-based circuit.
This comes off the back of the recent arbitration hearing that ruled in favour of the DP World Tour with regards to their members also competing on LIV Golf.
Resignation means Stenson and co will no longer receive further fines, with reports of further financial penalties of up to £500,000 / $630,000 if they were to remain members.
“It is sad that it has come to this,” Stenson told Golf Digest. “But it is what it is and it certainly wasn’t unexpected.
“They left me with no other choice so I have resigned. That’s it. I don’t really feel like it will do any good to dig into this too deeply.
“I’m appreciative of what the tour has done for me over the years. But they have chosen how they want to view the future. And we have obviously done the same. Unfortunately, they don’t go together at this point.”
Ryder Cup Legacy
Other Europeans such as Paul Casey and Martin Kaymer are being touted as the next to also hand in their DP World Tour membership.
Stenson himself was named Ryder Cup captain back in March 2022 in what has been a whirlwind year for the professional game.
However, his tenure lasted just 127 days before his decision to join LIV Golf meant he was removed with immediate effect.
And the Swede was victorious on his debut in the controversial breakaway tour, winning last year’s event in Bedminster.
But due to Stenson no longer holding a DP World Tour membership, he can no longer compete in the Ryder Cup if he continues to show promising form the Saudi-backed circuit.
The same applies to Garcia, Westwood and Poulter who – despite having huge Ryder Cup legacies – will no longer be able to contribute to Team Europe in any capacity.
