Record-breaking DeChambeau seals Omega Dubai Desert Classic

Bryson DeChambeau sealed his first European Tour title in spectacular fashion at the 30th edition of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic as the American carded a final round eight under par 64 to set the record for the lowest total of 24 under par at the oldest tournament on the Desert Swing

The 25 year old, who now has six worldwide wins since July 2017, started his final round with a one-stroke advantage over defending champion Haotong Li but immediately pulled away with a trio of birdies on his opening three holes. After making the turn at 32, the 2018 Ryder Cup rookie picked up two more shots with a sublime eagle at the tenth before carding three more birdies in his next four holes to take a commanding lead heading into the final stretch. The World No.5 sealed the victory in record-breaking fashion after picking up one more shot on the 17th before making a par at the last to secure a mammoth seven-shot triumph over Matt Wallace.

“Today I was happy with my game, I executed a lot of great shots,” said DeChambeau. “First off, I want to say thank you again to Your Highness, thank you, we appreciate everything you’ve done, the hospitality has been fantastic. I can say that Dubai is the future of the world. This place, the city, what you guys have done, it’s just absolutely fantastic, so great job. Today was a pleasure. It was obviously a lot of fun to be able to finally hoist an international trophy, so happy about that.”

Wallace’s four under par 68 saw him take second place on his own on 17 under par while Ian Poulter, Paul Waring and past champions Sergio Garcia, Haotong Li and Alvaro Quiros finished a shot further back to take a share of third place.

“Really happy with that result,” said Poulter. “Last week was a slightly different feeling, tripling 16. But to finish with three birdies in the last three holes today is obviously kind of makes amends for some of that last week.”

“It’s nice – I’m getting old but there’s still a few miles left in these legs.” – Ian Poulter

Meanwhile, South Africa’s Justin Harding shot a spellbinding nine under par 63 – the joint lowest score of the week – to finished tied seventh along with Lee Westwood, Jason Scrivener, Lucas Herbert and Thorbjorn Olesen, nine shots behind DeChambeau.
