It’s the end of an era for five-time Major winner Phil Mickelson.
For the first time in 28 years, after an incredible streak of 1,425 weeks, ‘Lefty’ has dropped outside of the Official World Golf Ranking top 100. The World Golf Hall of Famer fell to 101st in the world having started the year at 66th.
The 50-year-old has made four starts across the PGA and European Tours in 2021. He failed to make the cut in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The American Express while tying for 53rd in the Farmers Insurance Open and Saudi International powered by SoftBank Investment Advisers.
Mickelson made his debut on the PGA Tour Champions last year winning his first two starts and recently finishing inside the top 20 at the Cologuard Classic. Earlier this year Mickelson said if he didn’t play well early on that he’d “start to re-evaluate things” and “maybe play a few more events on the Champions Tour.”
Mickelson isn’t going away anytime soon, though, with the San Diego native part of the field for this week’s Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. The American will be hoping to replicate the form that saw him triumph at the iconic event in 2007 as he targets a return to the top 100.
