LIV Golfer makes shock return to the world’s top 50

LIV Golf rebel Harold Varner III has returned to the top 50 of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) despite accumulating less than one ranking point in the last six months.

Varner III, who joined LIV Golf in 2022, teed it up in Mayakoba last week where no world ranking points were available to the field.

Despite this, the American has still seen his OWGR rise from 51st to 49th to remain above the likes of Dustin Johnson (54th) and Patrick Reed (63rd).

The OWGR operates on a complex rolling system where ranking points retain their complete value for 13 weeks before gradually decreasing in equal increments over the following 91 weeks.

As a result, Varner III’s position improved despite his non-participation in a ranking tournament, while the players surrounding him in the OWGR experienced a reduction in their respective points tallies.

The last time the 32-year-old acquired points himself (0.63) was at February’s Saudi International on the Asian Tour where he finished T-46.

The time before that, he won 1.28 points for finishing T-48 at August’s BMW Championship, immediately prior to his jump to LIV Golf.

The former World No. 35 currently remains in the field for April’s Masters Tournament with this trip to Augusta likely his next opportunity to further climb the rankings.
