After a rare missed cut last week in Abu Dhabi, former Omega Dubai Desert Classic champion Henrik Stenson is looking to bounce back in style as the 30th anniversary of the iconic tournament gets underway at Emirates Golf Club on Thursday.
“I was a little rusty last week and missed the cut by one shot but I got some good work in over the weekend so hopefully I can play a little better this week,” said the Swede, who clinched the famed Dallah trophy in 2007. “I stayed down in Abu Dhabi on Friday and Saturday and did some work with Pete Cowen before coming down to Dubai so I hope I can build on it.”
Stenson finds himself in familiar surroundings having played every edition of the tournament dating back to 2001 and the former Dubai resident is a big fan of the Majlis course.
“I don’t know how many rounds I’ve played around here. I don’t feel like I need to learn the golf course. It’s more about getting used to the conditions that we’ll see this week. This not a course that you’re going to get bored of and feel like you’re playing it the same way every day, so I really enjoy playing here.” – Henrik Stenson
“We made Dubai our home for almost ten years and I still feel very much at home in Dubai and have had a lot of success – I’ve won here at Emirates GC, up at Jumeirah Golf Estates and in Qatar,” he said. “This region been a good hunting ground in terms of results and if you’re coming back to a place where you’ve won and played well in the past, it’s always going to give you a good feeling.”
