Augusta National has a funny way of reminding you who’s boss. One minute you’re slipping on a Green Jacket, the next you’re packing your bags Friday afternoon wondering where it all went wrong.
That was the story for Danny Willett, Bubba Watson, Zach Johnson, Fred Couples, Mike Weir, Vijay Singh and Angel Cabrera at the 2026 Masters. Between them, a ridiculous amount of Augusta history. This week? Not a sniff of the weekend.

Augusta Bites Back
There’s always romance around past champions teeing it up. The crowds still follow Freddie Couples like it’s 1992, and there are flashes where you think, “go on then, one more run.”
Then Augusta reminds you it’s not a highlights reel—it’s a grind.
Miss it in the wrong spot, get on the wrong side of the greens, and suddenly you’re leaking shots quicker than a dodgy range basket. Amen Corner did what Amen Corner does… chew you up and send you walking.

Different Game Now
Truth is, this isn’t the Augusta these guys won on.
The modern Masters is long, it’s brutal, and it demands everything. Speed, power, dialled wedges, and a putter that behaves. The young lads aren’t just hitting it miles—they’re hitting it miles with control.
That’s the difference.
Guys like Johnson and Weir built careers plotting their way round. That still works… just not quite well enough anymore.
Respect Where It’s Due
No shame here. Zero.
Winning a Masters means you’ve done something most of the golfing world only dreams about. These names are part of Augusta folklore forever.
But the cut line doesn’t care who you are. Past champion, legend, crowd favourite, it’s all irrelevant once that card goes in.
Augusta moves on quickly and this week, it moved on without them.
