Rory McIlroy’s 2025 Major Chances: Why the Hero Dubai Desert Classic Matters

Rory McIlroy is gearing up for what could be a career-defining year in 2025, with his sights firmly set on ending a 10-year wait for a Major championship. As a four-time Major winner, McIlroy knows what it takes to compete on golf’s biggest stages, and he’s ready to make his mark this season.

Kicking off his year at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, McIlroy has the chance to build early momentum. With four previous victories at this iconic event, the Northern Irishman believes a strong performance in Dubai could be the springboard for a major-winning season.

Hero Dubai Desert Classic Sets The Tone

“Dubai has always been a fantastic place for me,” McIlroy said during a recent interview. “The course suits my game, and it’s a great opportunity to test myself against some of the best players in the world. Winning here would give me huge confidence heading into the majors.”

McIlroy’s Major Chances

McIlroy’s 2025 major prospects are especially intriguing, with venues like Quail Hollow (PGA Championship) where Rory hold the course record and Royal Portrush (The Open) on the calendar. Both courses play to his strengths, and McIlroy knows how special it would be to lift The Open trophy on home soil.

“Royal Portrush is one of my favourite courses, and winning The Open there would be a dream come true,” he added. “But I’m taking it one step at a time. Right now, my focus is on Dubai.”

Strong finish to 2024

After finishing 2024 ranked World No. 3, with a PGA Tour-leading 4.5 birdies per round and top-10 finishes in three of four majors, McIlroy is well-positioned to compete at the highest level. A win at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic would set the tone for what could be a season to remember.
