Local golfers set for DHL Swing Against Cancer Golf Series 2019 opener at Dubai Creek

The UAE’s biggest charity golf series is set to return with a bang when the 2019 DHL Swing Against Cancer Golf Series kicks off with the DHL Open at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club on Thursday May 2nd.

Organised by Worldwide Golf and charity event specialists Sixteen10, the much-loved series, along with the Mike Clark Golf Day from which it was born, has raised over US$300,000 to help local cancer sufferers and has featured some of the biggest names from sports and entertainment including, from the football world, Harry Redknapp, Teddy Sheringham, Matt Le Tissier, Robbie Fowler, Didi Hamann and Lee Sharpe; 2005 US Open golf champion Michael Campbell; England rugby legend Mike Tindall, England cricketer Ian Bell and Westlife singer Brian McFadden.

As well as a huge variety of wonderful on-course side contests and raffle prizes at each event, the winner of the series will be treated to a ‘money-can’t-buy’ golf experience playing alongside the likes of Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia in the Pro-Am for the European Tour’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates as well as two VIP hospitality tickets for the opening day of the prestigious event. The top two finishers from each UAE qualifier will win a spot to compete for the top prize at the Grand Final at Jumeirah Golf Estates on Thursday November 7th.

KEY PARTNER

DHL’s Country Manager, Geoff Walsh, said: “As the most international company in the world, DHL are very much focused on a large number of global CSR initiatives that help make the world a better place by connecting people and improving lives. This can also be said locally for UAE charitable causes as well. It’s great to once again to be a key partner of the Swing Against Cancer Golf Series for yet another year. Given the premium planning and activation of the series we had no hesitation to once again be part of such a worthwhile cause that makes such a difference.

“We have been involved over the last couple of years, supporting individual events, and it is very clear what a great positive impact these events have, improving people’s lives by enabling and supporting treatment for many cancer patients.

“Cancer touches many families across the world in some way or another and we hope as title sponsor for the DHL Swing Against Cancer Golf Series, we can give something back by supporting families through very tough times.”

In addition to the DHL Open, the second leg of the series, after summer, will take in the eagerly anticipated DSA Open which will be played on the Majlis course at Emirates Golf Club, home to the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, on Thursday September 19th.

Former Man Utd ace Lee Sharpe had the gala dinner guests at last year’s event in stiches with his tales from his playing days with the Red Devils under Sir Alex Ferguson and Steve Kelshaw, Managing Director of Platinum Sponsor DSA Architects, is thrilled to continue supporting what has become one the region’s most popular events.

“DSA Architects International are proud to announce our partnership with the DHL Swing Against Cancer Golf Series 2019,” said Kelshaw.

The DSA boys enjoyed their time with Lee Sharpe.

WONDERFUL SUPPORT

“This is our third year of sponsorship and we are looking to once again go above and beyond to ensure that we raise as much money as possible for this great charity, which continues to grow in success and prominence year on year.

“We are confident that we can build on the great work done by our team in 2018, including the immense contribution by Lee Sharpe and all the wonderful support received from our partners and colleagues who helped make the day so special.”

The DHL Open will also be supported by well-known golf retailer Golf Superstore who will be providing all the players with top quality brand-name embroidered shirts and giving the competitors the chance to win some of the latest products during the event.

Golf Superstore’s Store Manager and Custom Fit Specialist Robbie McCarthy, said: “We are delighted to once again partner with Worldwide Golf and Sixteen10 to support the DHL Swing Against Cancer Golf Series. Although Golf Superstore’s retail philosophy is to serve the local community in all its golfing needs, it also takes seriously its responsibility to support worthwhile causes within the community, of which the DHL Swing Against Cancer series is one. We are proud to have the opportunity to showcase Golf Superstore at the event and look forward to another successful year.”

INSPIRED BY MIKE CLARK

The DHL Swing Against Cancer Golf Series was inspired by Mike Clark a much-loved member of the local golfing community who sadly lost his battle with bowel cancer in 2012 and the Grand Final of the series is also played in his memory alongside the Mike Clark Golf Day. Although Mike is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through his golf day and the series which grew from it and in the last two years, funds raised at the events have gone directly towards the treatment of three patients who have all responded well.

Anyone who has competed in these events will know that they are far more than ‘just another golf day’. From the on-course fun with the celebrity, to the sumptuous gala dinner with two hours of free-flowing beverages and the eagerly awaited on-stage Q&A with the guest of honour, they are truly memorable occasions on the sporting and social calendar. Not to be missed.
