England and Liverpool legend John Barnes to headline Fearnley International Open in Aberdeen

The popular UAE-based DHL Swing Against Cancer Golf Series is set to spread its wings and go global for the very first time when the stunning Newmachar Golf Club in Aberdeen plays host to the Fearnley International Open on Friday June 14th with Liverpool and Watford FC legend John Barnes announced as guest of honour and a spot in the Pro Am for the European Tour’s DP World Tour Championship in Dubai up for grabs.

Organised by Worldwide Golf and charity event specialists Sixteen10, the DHL Swing Against Cancer Golf Series has proved a huge hit with golfers in the United Arab Emirates since its launch in 2017 and has raised over US$300,000 for local cancer patients through its UAE based partner Friends of Cancer Patients. The series was inspired by Mike Clark a much-loved member of the local golfing community who sadly lost his battle with bowel cancer in 2012 and the Grand Final of the series is also played in his memory alongside the Mike Clark Golf Day.

A wide array of stars from the worlds of sport and entertainment have lent their support, including former Tottenham Hotspur manager and ‘King of the Jungle’ Harry Redknapp. Fellow ex-footballers Teddy Sheringham, Matt Le Tissier, Robbie Fowler, Didi Hamann and Lee Sharpe have also joined in to help the cause.

Others to have made the trip to the Middle East to get involved include 2005 US Open golf champion Michael Campbell, England rugby World Cup winner Mike Tindall, England cricketer Ian Bell and former Westlife singer Brian McFadden.

Barnes will be making his second appearance in the series after proving a big hit with guests at last month’s DHL Open at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club and the former Celtic F.C manager is hoping to raise plenty of money for Aberdeen based charity CLAN Cancer Support.

“I’m delighted to be coming over to Aberdeen for the Fearnley International Open,” said Barnes, who was capped 79 times by England and won two league titles, the FA Cup and the League Cup during a glittering spell at Liverpool during the 1980s and 1990s.

“The series does so much great work for cancer patients in the UAE so to come over to Scotland and lend a helping hand to CLAN Cancer Support is fantastic and something that I wanted to help out with. I had a great time getting to know the guys in Dubai at last month’s event and I’m sure the crowd in Aberdeen will be just as fun. It promises to be a great day as we join the fight against this horrendous disease.”

The football star, who also famously turned his hand to music with his iconic ‘John Barnes Rap’ in New Order’s classic England anthem ‘World In Motion’, will be spending time with the players taking part in the afternoon golf day at the stunning venue, but you don’t have to be a golfer to get in on the action.

There will also be an evening event which includes a sumptuous gala dinner presented by Apex Tubulars at the stately Mercure Ardoe House Hotel & Spa and 2 hours of free-flowing beverages. The highlight of the night will be Barnes takes to the stage to tell some stories about his incredible career and answer some questions from the audience.

As well as a huge variety of wonderful on-course side contests and raffle prizes, the winner of the event will win a trip to Dubai with three night’s accommodation to compete, along with the top two finishers from the DHL Open, and the top two from the DSA Open at Emirates Golf Club on September 19th, in the Grand Final at Jumeirah Golf Estates on November 7th.

There, they will play for a ‘money-can’t-buy’ golfing experience playing alongside the likes of Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia in the Pro-Am for the European Tour’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship as well as two VIP hospitality tickets for the opening day of the prestigious event.

Fearnley International Group LTD will be hosting an event on the DHL Swing Against Cancer Golf Series having previously been involved in several events as a support sponsor.

“As an owner of a global service company to the Oil and Gas Industry it is so rewarding to be able to invest in charitable causes such as Swing Against Cancer,”said Kevin Fearnley, CEO of Fearnley International Group Ltd, who will join Chief Sponsors DHL and DSA Architects in hosting an event on the 2019 series.

“Although I live and work in Dubai and was given the opportunity to be sponsor at this event for the first time in the UAE, it was great to see our idea taken on board to bring it to the ‘Granite City of Aberdeen’ and be the key partner and Title Sponsor of the Fearnley International Open in the 2019 DHL Swing Against Cancer Golf Series. Aberdeen is a place close to my heart. After starting my company there 25 years ago and living there for 17 years, I have met some great people during that time, many company owners who, like myself, are willing to give to good causes.”
