As of the recently concluded BMW International Open which was won by Argentia’s Andres Romero, there’s now a second cut in certain European Tour events after the third round.
The new cut is similar to the PGA Tour’s Rule 78. If 78 or more players make the traditional 36-hole cut cut in a tournament, then there will be a secondary cut after the third round down to the top 72 professionals and any players tied for 72nd place after three rounds.
The exception would be in situations where the field has to finish the third and fourth rounds in the same day.
At the BMW International Open, 83 players made the halfway cut so a further cut was made after the third round. All players cut after round three were still paid.
Amateurs don’t count toward either the second- or third-round cut numbers as they don’t earn money or Race to Dubai points.
