Bryson DeChambeau has already thrilled fans with some electric play in the majors this year—but according to the man himself, the best may still be yet to come. Next stop? Royal Portrush, where DeChambeau knows all too well what kind of gauntlet lies ahead at the 153rd Open Championship.
“It can be diabolical,” Bryson said with a wry grin, recalling his previous dance with the demanding Dunluce Links. “Driver is key on that golf course in wind conditions, especially side-winds. It’s going to be a real test of ball control. I’ve got to be in touch with my game. I’ve got to have better feel.”
Major Focus
Feel, of course, has never been a stranger to DeChambeau’s toolbox—especially in 2024. After a T6 at the Masters and a dramatic solo second at Valhalla, Bryson hoisted his second career U.S. Open trophy at Pinehurst No. 2. But Royal Troon humbled him with a missed cut at last year’s Open, and he’s laser-focused on making sure Portrush tells a different story.
“Yeah, I’d say I’m disappointed I haven’t won another major this year,” he admitted. “I need to fine-tune things. It’s about dialing in every shot and doing my homework. Not taking anything for granted. That’s what it’ll take to lift the Claret Jug.”
Ryder Cup Spot
While DeChambeau’s short-term target is links glory, his long game has another prize in sight: a Ryder Cup comeback. Currently 15th in the OWGR and sitting fifth in U.S. Ryder Cup points, he’s well within striking distance to lock down an automatic berth for Bethpage Black in 2025. And he’s got opinions on how the American team should shape up—including strong support for current U.S. captain Keegan Bradley.
“I personally think, given how he’s played, Keegan should absolutely be on the team,” DeChambeau said of his former Ryder Cup teammate. “Honestly, I’d have no issue with him being a playing captain.”
With Scottie Scheffler already clinched and stars like Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, and Ben Griffin jockeying for position, DeChambeau knows every shot matters from here on out—especially with the Open looming and Ryder Cup dreams hanging in the balance.
