It’s been a rollercoaster few years for the Colombian star. Once famous for his eye-popping flexibility and Spiderman-style green-reading, Villegas has battled through the toughest opponent of all, personal tragedy. But after enduring the heartbreaking loss of his daughter, Mia, in 2020, he has staged an emotional comeback, proving that golf is more than just a game.
In July 2020, Camilo and his wife, Maria, faced every parent’s worst nightmare when their 22-month-old daughter lost her battle with brain and spine tumors. “We lost our little angel,” Villegas shared. “She battled so hard. And she showed us a strength we never knew existed.”
The Dark Days
During those dark days, golf understandably took a backseat. There were moments when he considered walking away from the game for good. “I was biking a lot to stay fit … and I really thought about quitting,” he admitted. But something inside kept pushing him forward — Mia’s memory, her energy, and the belief that she would want her dad to keep fighting.
So he did. He hit the range with a fresh perspective, working tirelessly with coach Jose Campra to fine-tune his swing. Slowly but surely, the form returned. The putts started dropping and in November 2023, in a story that even Hollywood would struggle to script, Villegas found himself lifting a PGA Tour trophy once again, winning the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. His first victory in nine years.
Strength from Above
“I’ve got my little one up there watching and smiling,” he said, looking skyward after that emotional win. It wasn’t just Mia who was smiling, the entire golfing world was celebrating alongside him.
Now with his PGA Tour status secured through 2025, Villegas is playing with a new kind of purpose. “You’ve got to have a good attitude in life, and it’s easier said than done at times. But energy? You can bring energy not just to yourself but to those around you,” he said.
