The 56th edition of the Magical Kenya Open returns this week, promising another exciting chapter in the tournament’s rich history. Since joining the DP World Tour’s Global Schedule in 2019, the event has continued to attract world-class players eager to experience the unique challenge presented by Nairobi’s altitude and stunning Muthaiga Golf Club.
LIVE LEADERBOARD
With legendary past winners such as Seve Ballesteros, Ian Woosnam, and Trevor Immelman, the tournament carries a strong legacy. As the first of three consecutive events in Africa on the International Swing of the Race to Dubai, the Magical Kenya Open is set to deliver drama and unforgettable moments.

A Tournament with Deep Roots
First played in 1967, the Magical Kenya Open has long been a staple of professional golf in Africa. Initially won by Guy Wolstenholme, the event became part of the DP World Tour-operated Safari Tour from 1977 to 1990, before transitioning to the Challenge Tour from 1991 to 2018. In 2019, it took a significant step forward, becoming an official DP World Tour event. Now in its sixth edition under this status, the tournament continues to grow in stature and importance.
Muthaiga Golf Club a Historic Venue in History
Muthaiga Golf Club, the host venue for this year’s edition, has a long-standing association with the tournament, having shared hosting duties with Karen Country Club over the years. Established in the early 1920s and incorporated as a limited company in 1943, the club has played a key role in Kenya’s golfing heritage. In 2001, South African course designer Peter Matkovich was commissioned to modernise the layout, enhancing both its aesthetic appeal and playability. The revamped course was officially opened in 2004 by then-Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki, and it remains one of the premier golfing destinations in East Africa.

Get Ready For The ‘Bombs’
One of the unique aspects of this week’s event is the altitude. Sitting at 1,795m above sea level, Nairobi’s Muthaiga Golf Club is even higher than Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in Switzerland (1,495m), home of the Omega European Masters. The thin air at this elevation will see driving averages sore but the skill will be recalibrating players’ distance control on approach shots.

A Field Inspired by Legends
The Magical Kenya Open has witnessed some of golf’s biggest names lift the trophy, with former Masters champions Seve Ballesteros, Ian Woosnam, and Trevor Immelman among the past winners. Reflecting on his victory, Immelman once said, “Winning in Kenya was an incredible experience. The atmosphere, the passionate fans, and the unique conditions make this a special event on the calendar.”
Former European Tour winner and past participant Barry Lane echoed the sentiment: “The Kenya Open always had a special charm. Playing at altitude, in such a beautiful setting, made it stand out from other tournaments.”

A Key Stop on the International Swing
The Magical Kenya Open is the fifth event on the DP World Tour’s International Swing, the second of five ‘Global Swings’ in the 2025 Race to Dubai. It also marks the start of three consecutive events in Africa, further cementing the continent’s role in global professional golf.
Absa’s Continued Commitment
Presenting sponsor Absa has been a vital part of the tournament’s success, marking its 14th year of support in 2025.
