John Daly’s 1995 Claret Jug Up For Auction

Golf enthusiasts, take note! The iconic Claret Jug, awarded to John Daly for his victory at The Open in 1995 at St Andrews, is now officially up for auction. Bidding for the historic replica is already underway and currently stands at $86,000 with six days remaining.

This prized trophy is part of Golden Age Auctions’ latest premier auction, which will be accepting bids until Sunday, November 17. Crafted from sterling silver, the Jug stands an impressive 12 1/4 inches tall and comes encased in a luxurious 14 1/4 x 8 1/2 inch box, complete with the R&A logo embossed on its silk-lined interior.

To ensure authenticity, the Jug comes with a letter from Daly himself, confirming that you are indeed acquiring the genuine article.

As of Sunday evening, the bidding has been nothing short of frenetic, with 60 bids already placed and the current offer sitting at $86,062. The initial bid of $500 was made on Thursday, November 7, but it’s clear that interest in this piece of golfing history is only set to escalate.

The trophy’s seller purchased it directly from Daly in 2015, 2o years after Daly’s 1995 triumph marked his second Major championship win, following his victory at the PGA Championship in 1991. Interestingly, a piece of that earlier success also made waves at auction when Daly’s Cobra driver sold for a remarkable $17,300.40 in 2017.

What will the Claret Jug sell for?

With previous Claret Jugs fetching astronomical sums, including Gary Player’s 1974 trophy which sold for an eye-watering $481,068, it seems likely that we can expect a fierce bidding war over the next couple of days.

Winners of The Open are allowed to keep the original Claret Jug for just one year before returning it, receiving a replica in its place. So, if you’ve ever dreamed of owning a piece of golf history, now might just be your chance!
