Brooks Koepka has been undertaking ‘punishment workouts’ in recent weeks in the build-up to his PGA Championship title defence.
The American finished in a disappointing T-45 place at Augusta National despite nearly winning the tournament in 2023.
Because of his underwhelming result, the 34-year-old has been working overtime in the gym in recent weeks.
It appears to have paid off, as the four-time Ryder Cupper won for the fourth time on LIV Golf earlier this month in Singapore.
“It sucks,” Koepka said of his gym work after the Masters. “It’s not a lot of fun. A lot more running. Very up-tempo, no rest.
“Ara Suppiah, basically he kind of oversees my program with Hamish and Kolby, and they talk and they figure it out. I walked in and Ara told me that you finished 45th; you’re going to get penalised.
“I think I had like four or five days in a row of just — I turned white, I wanted to throw up in a few of them. But yeah, got through it.”
Koepka now has the opportunity this week to become a six-time Major champion, matching the likes of Phil Mickelson and Nick Faldo.
If victorious, the American would also match Tiger Woods for four PGA Championship victories.
“It’s a long golf course,” he added when asked for his opinion of the course. “So you’ve got to be able to hit the ball far. The rough is thick. If you’re going to miss fairways, you’re going to be in trouble.
“I think that’s pretty much the MO of a major championship. Got to hit fairways. Got to hit greens.”
Koepka tees off at 8.37am local time in a group with Max Homa and Jordan Spieth.
