Seamus Power is relishing the opportunity to play more DP World Tour events this season as he looks to play his way onto Luke Donald’s European Ryder Cup team.
The two-time PGA TOUR winner, who is in town for the inaugural Hero Cup, is keen to play more golf in Europe after struggling in recent years to find the opportunity to do so as he bid to keep hold of his PGA Tour playing privileges. That all changed in 2021 when he secured his first win in the States at the Barbasol Championship before picking up his second PGA Tour title at last year’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship, which saw him in end 2022 as the No.1 on the FedEx Cup Rankings.
“I’ve wanted to play more in Europe but it’s hard when you’re trying to keep hold of your PGA Tour card,” said Power. “Last year in particular was the first chance I could really get over to play on the DP World Tour, so I’m hoping to play a bit more this year. Obviously with the Ryder Cup in mind it makes sense to but even without that, playing more golf in Europe is something I would love to be a part of so starting here in the Middle East is a good start.
“Everyone has so many positive things to say about the Ryder Cup. Obviously, the team atmosphere and how there isn’t an event like it in the world of golf. I grew up watching the Ryder Cup and it’s all about playing for something more than yourself, there’s no money, it’s all about representing family, friends, team, continent, country, all that that kind of stuff. It’s an event that I’ve always dreamt about playing.”
With the Irishman a regular on the PGA Tour rather than the DP World Tour, this week’s Hero Cup has proved the perfect place to get to know some of his fellow Europeans, many of whom he had only seen on TV.
“It’s my first time playing a team event since my amateur days, so it’s great to be part of the Hero Cup this week,” said Power. “It’s my first time in this part of the world, which adds a little excitement, and I can’t wait to get started.”
“It was also my first time playing with Bob MacIntyre this week, I’ve obviously seen him on TV but getting the opportunity to play with him makes you realise how much of a lovely player and person he is.
“There’s a couple of names here who I’m aware of through watching them on TV but have never actually met them in person, so this week is a great opportunity to get to know some of these guys better and play competitive golf with them.”
