Dustin Johnson falls out of top five in the world ranking

For the first time since 2016, Dustin Johnson is not one of the five best players in the world.

The American has endured a sluggish restart after golf’s three-month hiatus, missing the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge and finishing T17 at The Heritage on Sunday.

Heritage winner Webb Simpson vaulted up from ninth into fifth to leapfrog ahead of Johnson.

This marks the first time that he has been outside the top 5 in the world since his victory at the 2016 US Open, which saw him jump from sixth to third in the rankings.

Johnson has been ranked No. 1 in the world for 91 weeks, most recently in April 2019.

This year had started positively for Johnson, with a share of seventh at the PGA Tour’s Tournament of Champions in Hawaii in January and then a runner-up finish in his defence of the Saudi International powered by Softbank Investment Advisors at Royal Greens Golf Club.

However his form slumped and he is yet to his his stride after the resumption of play on the PGA Tour.

Tiger Woods is still to tee it up since March and has fallen one spot to 14th while Daniel Berger has climbed from 154th in January to 28th thanks to his impressive run of form.

Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari are the high-profile Europeans who have opted against flying out to compete in the first few American events and their rankings has suffered as a result.

Fleetwood has dropped out of the top ten, down to 12th, while Molinari is currently ranked 30th having started the year 18th.
