IT’S A MIXED BAG FOR MCILROY IN 2017

Since Nike announced the end of their journey in the hard-wear business last August, speculation has been rife regarding which bats World No. 2 Rory McIlroy will opt for in 2017.

He told us during the DP World Tour Championship in November that he planned to take his time and have a dabble with a variety of potential suitors before deciding his next love.

According to a report on US website NoLayingUp.com, he has chosen to remain a ‘free man’ for the time being and will enter the New Year using a mixed bag comprising Callaway woods and irons, Titleist ball and wedges and an Odyssey putter.

“With everything that’s going on in the golf world and the golf business right now, especially with my sponsor Nike pulling out of the golf equipment business, it’s given me the freedom to try other things in the market that I haven’t been able to try the last few years. It’s nice to have a little look around,” McIlroy told No Laying Up. “The golf ball will be the big thing.”

And it would appear that he has plumped for a Titleist Pro V1x which has in turn influenced the decision to go with Callaway’s soon to be released GBB Epic Sub Zero range for the woods and their Apex irons.

“I want to play the new ProV1x ball and I know the Callaway driver works the best with it. I also know my Nike irons don’t work as well with the Titleist ball because of the groove format. Too spinny, and a loss of distance,” McIlroy told the US site.

In addition, the four-time Major winner will reportedly opt for Titleist Vokey wedges and a prototype Odyssey putter when he gets the new golfing year underway at the BMW South African Open on January 12.

He’s not being paid to use any of them which is a nice bit of PR for the boys at Callaway and Titleist.
