DHL Swing Against Cancer Golf Series returns

After the phenomenal success of last year’s inaugural Swing Against Cancer Golf Series, the popular series returns this year with a brand-new title sponsor in the shape of the world’s leading logistics company, DHL.

The 2018 DHL Swing Against Cancer Golf Series gets underway with the DHL Open on the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates on May 3rd. Expect great golf and laughs with Liverpool legend Dietmar Haman who will be joining in the action as well as taking part in a Q and A, delicious food and drink and most importantly of all – a highly worthy cause.

Organised by Worldwide Golf and Sixteen10, the 2017 Swing Against Cancer Golf Series went above and beyond expectation, gaining unprecedented support from the worlds of sport, entertainment and business as well as capturing the imagination of the UAE’s golfing community which all helped to raise US$100,000 for local charity, Friends of Cancer Patients, which went directly to the treatment of two patients badly in need of care.

“Across the globe, we are very much focused on a large number of CSR initiatives that help make the world a better place and this can also be said locally for UAE charitable causes as well,” said Geoff Walsh, Country Manager, DHL Express UAE. “When we were approached by Sixteen10, Worldwide Golf and the Swing Against Cancer Golf Series we had no hesitation to support given the premium planning and activation of the series, and more importantly to support such a worthwhile cause. “We have been involved over the last couple of years, supporting individual events and it is very clear what a great positive impact these events have, improving people’s lives by enabling and supporting treatment for many cancer patients”.

“Cancer touches many families across the world in some way or another and we hope as title sponsor for the DHL Swing Against Cancer Golf Series, we can give something back by supporting families through very tough times.”

Sporting stars such as former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister, ex-Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp, England rugby captain Mike Tindall and US Open golf champion Michael Campbell as well as Westlife singer Brian McFadden got behind last year’s series and helped to lift its profile on a global scale. The funds raised last year paid for 2 year old leukemia sufferer Yehya, and 37 year old rectal cancer patient Waleed to undergo much needed chemotherapy treatment while money raised this year will help 6 year old Retaj Bassam Ghaniem get the urgently needed stem cell treatment she needs to fight the leukemia from which she is suffering.

WORLDWIDE GOLF’S RICHARD BEVAN AND SIXTEEN10’S REZA SAZEGAR MET WITH 6 YEAR OLD LEUKEMIA SUFFERER RETAJ BASSAM GHANIEM AND HER PARENTS AT THE FRIENDS OF CANCER PATIENTS HEADQUARTERS. THE 2018 DHL SWING AGAINST CANCER GOLF SERIES WILL RAISE FUNDS FOR RETAJ’S STEM CELL TREATMENT.

“Cancer touches many families across the world in some way or another and we hope as title sponsor for the DHL Swing Against Cancer Golf Series, we can give something back by supporting families through very tough times,” added Walsh. “At DHL we recognise the role we can play through support and therefore can help make a difference to many lives across the UAE, through partnering with such credible charitable initiatives such as the Swing Against Cancer Golf Series.”

The series was inspired by Mike Clark a much-loved member of the local golfing community who sadly lost his battle with bowel cancer in 2012 and the Grand Final of the series is also played in his memory alongside the Mike Clark Golf Day. Anyone who took part in the series last year knows that these are events not to be missed.

From the qualifiers such as spectacular DSA Open at Emirates Golf Club to the star-studded extravaganza of a Grand Final at Jumeirah Golf Estates there are phenomenal prizes and activations from the likes of Ping and Titleist, a grand prize of a spot alongside the likes of Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia in the DP World Tour Championship Pro-Am and highly entertaining after-dinner Q&As with a host of sporting icons accompanied by the finest F&B.

“The Swing Against Cancer Golf Series events are golf days of another level,” said Richard Bevan, General Manager of WSP Global, publishers of Worldwide Golf. “Last year’s series really captured the imagination of the local golfing community and gathered momentum throughout the year. Due to the wonderful support of sponsors such as DHL
and DSA Architects we are able to make each tournament a really special and memorable event and we were blown away by the number of players who took part in the qualifiers and the Grand Final last year. We’ve set the bar high but we’re confident that this year’s series will be even bigger and better with some exciting new additions.”

As well as the DHL Open on May 3rd, the hugely popular DSA Open will return to Emirates Golf Club later this year while the Swing Against Cancer Golf Series is set to go international with a qualifier at a London venue in the UK pencilled for July 3rd.

“Raising over $100,000 in 2017 to pay for the treatment of two cancer patients was a truly rewarding experience,” – Reza Sazegar, Founder of Sixteen10.

“With the addition of an UK event this year we hope to raise the profile of the series further still. Our goal is to unite
communities through golf by putting on exceptional events with celebrity endorsements and together, help raise money to fight back against this terrible disease. “I would like to thank DHL and all those who helped to make this
possible and ask others to join the 2018 edition of the DHL Swing Against Cancer Golf Series.”

The winning amateur of the 2018 DHL Swing Against Cancer will play in the pro-am for the DP World Tour Championship and receive VIP hospitality tickets for one day of the tournament while the winning pro will receive a golf holiday to the spectacular Shangri-La Golf Resort & Spa, Hambantota, Sri Lanka. So what are you waiting for – get involved in the DHL Swing Against Cancer Golf Series to be part of something special.
