What’s happened to Rory McIlroy?

Rory McIlroy is experiencing a serious slump in form after producing arguably the best season of his career last year when he won three events and finished in the top 10 in all but five of his 19 starts on the PGA Tour.

However, the defending FedEx Cup champion has now played seven tournaments since the PGA Tour’s restart in June and has no top-10 finishes to show for it.

He’s lost his World No. 1 ranking and is now World No.4, fallen outside the top 10 in the FedEx Cup standings and only managed to finish tied 33rd in the year’s lone Major championship last month.

Prior to the tour’s COVID hiatus, the Northern Irishman had posted seven straight finishes inside the top five.

So what’s gone wrong?

McIlroy said after this week’s Northern Trust event where Dustin Johnson won by 11 strokes to become World No.1: “I feel like the last few weeks, I’ve just been going through the motions. I want to get an intensity and some sort of fire, but I just haven’t been able to. And look, that’s partly to do with the atmosphere and partly to do with how I’m playing.

“I’m not inspiring myself, and I’m trying to get inspiration from outside sources to get something going.”

The 31 year old will be hoping he can turn around this form for the 2020 U.S. Open on 17 September where he’s looking to win his first Major since 2014. If anybody can do it, Rory can.
