Shane Lowry on 2023 Ryder Cup: Underdogs Europe have ‘nothing to lose mentality’

Shane Lowry believes Team Europe will thrive off their underdog tag at next year’s Ryder Cup while tipping the likes of Robert MacIntyre and Guido Migliozzi to make the team.

Lowry, who recently won the 2022 BMW PGA Championship, looks a likely candidate to feature in Luke Donald’s side in Rome next year.

Europe haven’t lost a Ryder Cup on home soil since 1993, but the Irishman acknowledges they have their work cut out to retain their unbeaten streak.

“We’ll be going to Italy next year as underdogs,” Lowry said. “I think we could just go in and try to take the underdog tag.

“Just go out and go for it. Nothing to lose mentality.”

The 2019 Open Champion also mentioned recent DP World Tour winners, MacIntyre and Migliozzi, as potential team-mates in Italy.

MacIntyre won the recent Italian Open at next year’s Ryder Cup course, while Migliozzi triumphed at the Cazoo Open de France.

“Team Europe have had a nice start to the qualifying campaign with recent winners.” – Lowry

“It’s great to see Bob win and it was great to see Guido win last week,” Lowry added.

“I think if we can get our core group of players playing well at the right time, we can go there and give it a go.

“Our team, it would be great to see people like that stand up and make the team and go there, the likes of Bob and Guido.

“You look at Bob, he looks like a determined, gritty character. I would say it doesn’t matter who he stands on the first tee against, he feels he can beat them.

“People like that, you want on your team.”

The 2023 Ryder Cup is set to take place between 29 September – 1 October at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy.
