Sergio Garcia has slammed Rory McIlroy for the breakdown in their friendship since the Spaniard joined LIV Golf last year.
The duo had enjoyed a solid relationship over the years, teaming up at the Ryder Cup and attending each other’s wedding, with McIlroy acting as a groomsman at Garcia’s, but things turned sour after Garcia joined the breakaway league for a reported $40 million.
It was recently reported that McIlroy had deleted Garcia’s number from his phone after the pair exchanged a fiery exchange over LIV Golf.
“I think it is very sad,” Garcia told The Telegraph.
“I think that we’ve done so many things together and had so many experiences that for him to throw that away just because I decided to go to a different tour, well, it doesn’t seem very mature; lacking maturity, really.
“Rory’s got his own life and he makes his own choices, the same way that I make mine. I respect his choice, but it seems like he doesn’t respect the ones I make. So a one-way street.
“I don’t have a problem with him. He’s the one that has a problem. So if he wants to reconcile, then I’m willing to talk, but I’m not sure he’ll pull himself down to that level.”
LIV Golf get their 2023 season underway today with the first tournament being held at El Camaleón Golf Course, a former PGA Tour venue.
