Richard Mansell claimed his long-awaited first DP World Tour title with a dramatic finish at the weather-shortened Porsche Singapore Classic, clinching a one-shot victory thanks to a closing birdie on the final hole.
With Thursday’s play washed out, the tournament was reduced to 54 holes. Mansell began the final round at Laguna National Golf Resort Club just one shot off the lead at ten under par.
Lighting It Up!
After a steady start with three opening pars, the 29-year-old Englishman caught fire, reeling off five consecutive birdies from the 4th to surge into a two-shot lead at the turn.
Despite being caught on the back nine, Mansell kept his composure. He saved his best for the final hole, two-putting from over 100 feet for birdie at the 18th to card a superb six-under 66 and post a winning total of 16 under par.
Japan’s Keita Nakajima, who set the clubhouse lead with a flawless 65 featuring seven birdies, had to settle for second place — denied a playoff by Mansell’s late heroics. Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin and France’s Adrien Saddier shared third at 14 under.
The victory marks a significant moment for Mansell, not only as his first win on Tour but also coming in his debut event with new caddie David Kenny on the bag. The triumph propels him to the top of the Asian Swing Rankings.
Mansell Reflects on Journey to Victory
“What a feeling,” Mansell said. “Just to get into that position, and to play the way I did — especially with a new caddie this week — it feels incredible. There were moments today where he just got me to slow down, and that made all the difference.”
Mansell’s path to victory hasn’t been without its challenges. After several close calls in 2022, he admitted to losing his way.
“I went searching for something, started blaming others, and just stopped enjoying the game. It’s taken a lot of hard work over the past six months to get back to basics. My wife Ellie’s been incredibly supportive — I’ve had to learn to be patient and focus on myself again.”
“I was lucky to have a chance on the last and made it count. It’s just amazing. I’ve been on the phone to my mum, dad, and Ellie’s parents — they’ve all believed in me, even when I didn’t.”
In an emotional message to aspiring professionals, Mansell added: “That moment on the 18th — it’s the most fulfilling thing in the world. Stick at it, and hopefully your time will come too.”
