Dubai-based Englishman Garrick Porteous heads back to the HotelPlanner Tour’s Abu Dhabi Challenge (17–20 April), revisiting the site of his stunning 2024 victory at Al Ain Equestrian Shooting and Golf Club. A final-round 63 secured his second HotelPlanner Tour title at 24-under-par, edging out Alexander Levy by one.
New Chapter, New Mindset
Despite the success, Porteous made the decision to retire from full-time professional golf, ending a 10-year career across the DP World and HotelPlanner Tours.
“All the travel just wore me down,” said Porteous, now working as a golf brand manager. “I kind of fell out of love with tournament golf. Being away from family takes its toll.”
After completing his PGA qualification, the 35-year-old stepped away to explore life beyond the grind of tour life.
A Return Without Expectations
Last week, Porteous returned to action at the UAE Challenge at Al Zorah Golf & Yacht Club, his first HotelPlanner Tour start since October. Though he missed the cut with rounds of 74 and 70, he now looks ahead to a familiar venue with fond memories—but tempered ambitions.
“I’d love to make the cut. Stringing four rounds together would be amazing. I’ve no expectations—just looking forward to it.”
New Balance Through Local Competition
Now living in Dubai, Porteous keeps his game sharp through Emirates PGA events.
“Kieran Pratt at the Emirates Golf Federation does a great job setting up events. I’ve even won a couple, and it’s helped me meet other teaching pros and golf people here.”
Stacked Field in Abu Dhabi
Porteous joins a strong field including recent winner Renato Paratore, two-time DP World Tour champion Eddie Pepperell, Dubai-based Adri Arnaus, and the UAE’s Joshua Grenville-Wood.
The event also benefits from a strong local presence thanks to the Emirates Golf Federation’s partnership with the European Tour group, offering 30 spots to UAE players.
Ahmad Skaik, the first Emirati to make the cut in a European Tour group event, returns alongside his brother Mohammed, Sam Mullane, Jonathan Selvaraj, Neyl Cherrat, and Rayan Ahmed.
