Having recently clinched victory at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship at Yas Links Abu Dhabi, Paul Waring is feeling buoyant as he sets his sights on the Ryder Cup at Bethpage. The 39-year-old, who is currently based in Dubai, not only secured his PGA TOUR card with this first Rolex Series win but also collected crucial Ryder Cup points in the process.
Ryder Cup
Waring has previously been involved with the Ryder Cup as a commentator for 5 Live Sports, but he now harbours ambitions of competing in 2025 rather than merely reporting from the sidelines.
“Playing in a Ryder Cup is something we all dream of,” Waring remarked. “It’s a massive event that you grow up watching and feel a part of. Though to go over and compete at Bethpage you need to be a beast. It’s going to be hostile, but I want to turn myself into a person that can go and embrace that situation.”
Jumeirah Golf Estates Family
This week, Waring has the opportunity to earn even more valuable Ryder Cup points as he aims for back-to-back victories at Jumeirah Golf Estates, a course he considers his second home. With his wife and a supportive entourage of friends cheering him on, could the Englishman join Rory McIlroy and become the second player to win two consecutive Rolex Series events? He certainly has the experience of battling it out on the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates.
Friday Game
“I play every Friday with a group of lads at the 500 Club, which gives me some excellent competitive golf,” Waring explained. “We alternate between the Earth and Fire courses. Everyone has to hole out, but they make me play off plus six. However, after last week’s performance, I suspect my handicap will be adjusted to plus seven or eight. Playing these courses week in and week out, along with the Tommy Fleetwood Academy, creates a fantastic environment and allows me to surround myself with great people.”
