Meronk Leads Under the Lights in Riyadh

As play concluded beneath the floodlights at Riyadh Golf Club, the opening round of LIV Golf’s season debut highlighted those best able to adapt to the unique night-time conditions.

Dubai-based Adrian Meronk, no stranger to floodlit golf in the Emirates, showcased his experience with an impressive eight-under-par round, securing the overnight lead. Hot on his heels are Lee Westwood, Sebastián Muñoz, and ‘new recruit’ Tom McKibbin.

Despite criticism for rejecting his PGA Tour card and disregarding Rory McIlroy’s advice, McKibbin appeared entirely unfazed. In fact, the young Northern Irishman looked more relaxed than ever, which reflected in his performance. “It’s been an incredible few days, getting to spend time with these guys, playing together, and just soaking in the whole experience of something new,” he said.

“Night golf has been really cool, especially this week. Playing under the lights has been a unique challenge, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how things unfold tomorrow.”

LIV Golf Champ Happy Captain

Meanwhile, last season’s champion Jon Rahm and runner-up Joaquín Niemann sit in a tie for eighth at five under par. Niemann, another player who swiftly adjusted to the floodlit conditions, admitted the change presented some challenges: “It’s not something we usually do, so you have to adjust. The different lighting can affect your perception of distance, and with the cooler temperatures, it can feel a bit strange at times.”

From a team standpoint, Rahm will be pleased to see his Legion XIII teammate, Hero Dubai Desert Classic champion Tyrrell Hatton, well in contention at six under, sharing fifth place with Caleb Surratt.

Major shock

However, not everyone had a night to remember. At the foot of the leaderboard sits five-time major champion Brooks Koepka, struggling to a disappointing two-over-par round. Renowned coach Pete Cowen had previously voiced concerns that playing under artificial light wouldn’t suit everyone, and all eyes will be on Koepka to see how he responds in round two.
