Rory McIlroy described his opening round of 66 as a “nice way to start the year” after taking a one-shot lead following day one of the 2026 Dubai Invitational.
Starting on the tenth tee, the World Number Two made an electric early statement, racing to six under par through ten holes thanks to seven birdies and a single bogey. Although his momentum slowed late in the round, McIlroy’s composed finish was enough to secure the clubhouse lead at five under par.
Flying start sets the tone
McIlroy was inches away from an opening eagle before rolling in a close-range birdie at the 11th to move to two under. A slipped four-foot par putt at the 12th briefly halted progress, but the Northern Irishman responded immediately with back-to-back birdies at the 13th and par-three 14th, the latter set up by a superb tee shot.
Further gains at the 17th and 18th saw him turn at four under and two shots clear of the field. His momentum continued with a seventh birdie of the day at the first, stretching his advantage to three strokes at six under.
“It was good. I got off to a great start and played a very good first nine,” said McIlroy. “The wind picked up on our second nine and it felt trickier, but overall it was a nice way to start the year.”

Chasing pack keeps pressure on
Finn Oliver Lindell mounted a strong challenge with a birdie run from the ninth to the 13th, briefly drawing level with McIlroy after the leader dropped a shot at the third. France’s Adrien Guerrier also joined the tie momentarily, but both fell back as conditions toughened late in the afternoon.
Scotland’s Connor Syme and Spain’s David Puig emerged as McIlroy’s closest challengers, carding matching rounds of 67 to sit one shot back at four under par.

Wallace’s rollercoaster round
Matt Wallace produced one of the rounds of the day statistically, surging to seven under par after four consecutive birdies around the turn. However, two dropped shots and a costly double bogey ended his challenge, leaving him tied for fifth at three under alongside Guerrier, Antoine Rozner and Ángel Ayora.
