McIlroy and Rose lead European charge at Charles Schwab Challenge

Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy will spearhead the European charge at the Charles Schwab Challenge with the Ryder Cup stars three strokes behind leader Xander Schauffele heading into the final round.

Schauffele, who has won four times worldwide, birdied the last for a four-under 66 to move to 13 under and hold the outright lead at the first PGA Tour event in three months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

American quartet Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Gary Woodland and Collin Morikawa sit in tied second alongside European Tour star Branden Grace on 12 under.

The European charge comes in the shape of McIlroy and Rose who take a share of ninth on 10 under. England’s Rose dropped two shots in his last three holes while World No.1 Rory McIlroy shot a one under par 69 which included three birdies and two bogeys.

“I didn’t think I played well but, looking at the leaderboard, no-one else pulled away,” said McIlroy, who put himself in contention with a super seven under par 63 on Firday. “I’m within striking distance.”

Rose, who won the event in 2018, said”it will be all-out attack” on Sunday after signing for for a 68 that contained six birdies, one double bogey and two bogeys.

“I love competing here. It offers a lot of birdie opportunities and my putting has been amazing but it fell apart a bit on the back nine.” – Justin Rose

Ryder Cup legend Ian Poulter sits six off the lead in tied 22nd while Worldwide Golf columnist, Rafa Cabrera Bello, is a shot further back at Colonial Country Club.
