Despite only turning professional less than a month ago, Swedish star Ludvig Aberg could be in the mix for a shock outing at the Ryder Cup in September, with European Captain Luke Donald reportedly highly impressed with the youngster.
The smooth-swinging 23-year-old made history as the first player to earn direct access to the PGA TOUR via collegiate merit, finishing No. 1 on the 2023 PGA TOUR University Ranking last month.
The Texas Tech alum has played three PGA Tour events since then, finishing inside the top 25 twice before sharing 40th at last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic where he was paired with Donald during the opening two rounds.
Ludvig certainly made an impression on the Englishman during the opening round, carding a 65 containing an eagle and seven birdies and marred only by bogeys on the last two holes.
With this year’s Ryder Cup squad set for a major reshuffle, could we see the Swedish sensation on the team?
According to CBS’s Kyle Porter on Twitter, “Nick Dougherty said he talked to Euro Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald about Ludvig,” with Porter further tweeting: “He told me there have only been a few (players) that he’s played with for the very first time that have the ‘wow’ factor. One of them is Rory. That was back in 2008 at the Dunhill Links.
“Now he says Ludvig Aberg is one of those guys as well. He said his driver is a huge weapon, he makes the game look effortless. He added that, as long as he continues to show form, he will definitely be considered for the (Ryder Cup) team… This guy is going to be a superstar.”
With Donald receiving six Captain’s Picks before the showdown at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club it could well pave the way for a maiden outing in the biennial contest for Aberg.
