Louis Oosthuizen expecting ‘nerve wracking and exciting’ week at 2023 AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open

South African great Louis Oosthuizen is anticipating a “nerve wracking and exciting” week at the upcoming 2023 AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open on a course he helped design.

The venue for this week’s event, Heritage La Réserve GC, was co-designed by the 2010 Open Champion in collaboration with acclaimed architect Peter Matkovich.

Having triumphed at the Alfred Dunhill Championship last week, marking his return to the winners’ circle after a five-year hiatus, the 41-year-old acknowledges that teeing it up again this week brings a new set of pressures.

“It’s nerve wracking and exciting at the same time hearing what the guys think of the golf course,” Oosthuizen told Worldwide Golf.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the final product this week, but it looks spectacular. I know Peter’s done a good job.

“The course is narrow, with small greens on a few holes which is good. From the back tees you need to really strike the ball and find your way around this course. If you’re playing well you can still make birdies.”

When asked if he learnt anything new about the game of golf during the designing process, Oosthuizen joked: “A lot of things, they told me to stay in my lane and be a golfer, not a designer!

“There are so many things that goes into designing. I was astonished about everything you need to think of, that’s where Peter is a masterclass with all of this.”

AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open is set to get underway on December 14, 2023.
