Lawrence channels MENA Golf Tour roots to claim second Omega crown

Thriston Lawrence showed nerves of steel in the Swiss Alps, recovering from a nightmare start to card a closing 66 and capture his second Omega European Masters title at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club.

The South African, who cut his teeth in the region on the MENA Golf Tour, began the final round with a one-shot advantage but looked to have thrown it away after opening with three straight bogeys. Suddenly trailing by two and with Ryder Cup hero Matt Fitzpatrick – another product of the early MENA circuit – and past champion Matt Wallace ahead of him, Lawrence needed something special.

Lawrence Power Play

It came at the par-four sixth, where he bravely drove the green and holed from just inside 20 feet for eagle. That shot ignited a brilliant surge: five birdies in the next eight holes catapulted him into a three-shot lead. Even when his approach at the 15th careered towards the penalty area, Lawrence held firm, scrambling a vital par before closing out with calm pars to seal victory at 22-under-par – his fifth DP World Tour title, and second in the mountains following his 2022 success.

Wallace finished tied second on 20-under alongside Rasmus Højgaard and Sami Välimäki, with Fitzpatrick one stroke further back.

For Lawrence, the win was as much about resilience as talent:

“Winning is tough. I was so nervous all day. After that start I thought I’d thrown it away, but I’m proud of how I fought.”

With both Lawrence and Fitzpatrick having honed their early professional years on the MENA Golf Tour, their continued rise on the global stage adds weight to the circuit’s reputation as a genuine springboard for emerging talent. As the Tour prepares for its much-anticipated relaunch later this year, their triumphs serve as powerful reminders of the opportunities the Middle East can provide for the next generation of stars.
