Koepka Calls Time on LIV Experiment as Family Takes Priority

In a move that’s sent shockwaves through professional golf, Brooks Koepka has parted ways with LIV Golf. The five-time major champion leaves after three turbulent years with the Saudi-backed circuit. He becomes the first marquee player to exit the breakaway league. His departure raises fresh questions about both his future and LIV’s staying power.

Why Brooks Koepka Left LIV Golf

LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil confirmed the 35-year-old is prioritising family needs. Koepka wants to stay closer to home now. The split was described as amicable despite one year remaining on his contract. His reported nine-figure deal made headlines when signed.

It’s a far cry from June 2022 when his defection made global news. His move from the PGA Tour helped legitimise the fledgling enterprise.

The American’s wife, Jena Sims, suffered a miscarriage at 16 weeks in October. This underscored the personal challenges the family has faced. Travel demands and global time zones took their toll. Koepka decided the moment was right to step away.

Koepka’s Struggles in 2025

The departure caps a difficult season for the former world number one. He managed just two top-10 finishes this year. Koepka finished 31st in LIV’s individual standings.

His struggles weren’t confined to the breakaway circuit either. Koepka missed the cut at three of this year’s four majors. This marks a stark contrast to his dominant 2017-2019 peak. He captured four majors in two years during that stretch.

Koepka’s Growing Frustration with LIV

Unlike teammate Bryson DeChambeau, Koepka never publicly championed LIV’s cause. His frustration became increasingly apparent over time.

Back in March, he admitted uncertainty about his future. He didn’t know where he’d be once his contract expired. Earlier in spring, he remarked the league hadn’t progressed as hoped. This was hardly a ringing endorsement from one of their flagship stars.

Will Koepka Return to the PGA Tour?

A PGA Tour return seems likely but complicated. The circuit typically imposes a year-long suspension on LIV defectors. Koepka’s pathway may differ given he wasn’t among those who sued initially.

ESPN reports he’ll need to reapply for membership. This triggers a reinstatement process involving board input and player directors.

The PGA Tour’s response was diplomatically measured. “Brooks Koepka is a highly accomplished professional,” they stated. “We wish him and his family continued success.” The language suggests the door isn’t quite shut, even if not wide open.

What Koepka’s Exit Means for LIV Golf

For LIV Golf, losing Koepka is undeniably problematic. His 2023 PGA Championship victory at Oak Hill proved LIV players could compete. That win provided crucial legitimacy for the league.

Now, with Koepka departing, the league’s star power rests heavily on DeChambeau and Rahm. This represents a considerably thinner bench than executives envisioned.

Looking Ahead for LIV and Koepka

Talor Gooch will inherit Koepka’s captaincy of Smash GC. The team change comes ahead of LIV’s 2026 season opener in February.

Whether Koepka returns to the PGA Tour in 2027 remains unclear. He may chart a different course entirely. Either way, golf will be better with a focused, competitive Brooks Koepka back.
