INTERVIEW: Charley Hull feeling good ahead of the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters

The ambitious 20-year-old Charley Hull is going from strength to strength after having a stellar 2016 season. The Englishwoman talked to Worldwide Golf about her experience in the Olympics, her first LPGA Tour win and how she is prepared for the OMEGA Dubai Ladies Masters.

Worldwide Golf: You have been associated with OMEGA for quite some time now, what makes this partnership so special to you?

Charley Hull: It is pretty cool! I am with OMEGA because they sponsored the Olympics and a couple of golf events and I think that makes them a little bit more special.

WWG: You recently earned your first LPGA title (CME Group Tour Championship) in record-breaking style, you must be really happy with your form.

CH: Yes, I am very happy with my recent performances. I have had quite a few good weeks coming into it as well so I was buzzing for final week of the LPGA Tour and I managed to get the win. I took a couple of days off out of the last couple of weeks before coming here. I feel refreshed now and I really look forward to the tournament as I enjoy the golf course here.

WWG: Was this your career highlight to date?

CH: I would say a win on the LPGA Tour and the in the season finale is a pretty good title to win.

WWG: What is it like on the LPGA rather than the Ladies European Tour? Do you get treated better, is the competition fiercer?

CH: The LPGA have more events and obviously the best players in the world are over there so the standards are great. When you win one of the LPGA Tour titles it feels like you have accomplished something big. I also love the Ladies European Tour and they have some great players as well. I think it is just a bit of different styles of golf courses like in the USA the courses are longer, but overall I enjoy both.

WWG: You finished 4th in Rio? How was the experience of competing in the Olympics?

CH: It was a pretty cool experience. Just coming short of winning a medal was a bit disappointing, but I loved it out there, and it is an awesome thing to say that you are an Olympian, it is a good thing to have on your CV!

WWG: Do you think golf will go on to be a successful event at future Olympics?

CH: I hope it does. I am not quite sure how the response was this year because I do not really look into the statistics. I just play golf and wish for the best, but hopefully it carries on.

WWG: You seem like you have been around for ages but are still only 20. Any main targets for this season?

CH: Ever since I was younger my aim’s to be the World Number One golfer so hopefully I can keep on playing and achieve this target.

WWG: A fifth place finish is your best so far in the OMEGA Dubai Ladies Masters but this event seems to be one you really enjoy. What is it about the event that makes it stand out for you?

CH: I love this event because I have won Rookie of the Year here three years ago, and on the following year I won the Order of Merit. I love Dubai, it is a beautiful and fun city to be in.

WWG: And finally, you’re a fantastic role model for young golfers. Do you think a shorter, and more fun format would be a good idea for the growth of the game?

CH: I don’t know about shorter format but I think they should speed the play of golf up because sometimes it is so slow. I am a fast players so I think that would work for me personally.
