Ian Poulter to fight for Open Championship spot in Hong Kong

Ian Poulter will be hoping to secure one of the four Open Championship spots available at the Asian Tour’s World City Championship after the Ryder Cup star was confirmed to be headlining the first international golf event to be staged in Hong Kong for over three years.

The tournament. which will be held from March 23-26, was confirmed to be part of the Open Qualifying Series last week by the R&A, and will see the leading four players not otherwise exempt qualify for this year’s Open Championship.

Opportunities for Poulter to qualify for the oldest Major Championship are few and far between given the fact he plays on the LIV Golf league, which offers no World Ranking points.

The three-time PGA Tour winner has tumbled down to 149th in the Official World Golf Ranking, with his only real hope of qualifying relying on securing a decent finish in one of the Qualifying Series events, which spans 9 countries and 15 tournaments.

“Hong Kong is one of my favourite places and I am looking forward to coming back to Asia’s ‘World City’ for the first World City Championship presented by Hong Kong Golf Club,” said Poulter, who won the DP World Tour’s Hong Kong Open in 2010.

Former Open champion Henrik Stenson will join his LIV Golf compatriot in the field, while many more stars names from the breakaway circuit are set to take part in their bid to qualifying for The Open.
