Ian Poulter condemns potential Ryder Cup snub

Ian Poulter has condemned the possibility of missing out on Ryder Cup captaincy in the future due to his move to LIV Golf.

The Englishman, along with fellow LIV Golf defectors Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood and Graeme McDowell, had been considered a shoo-in for leading the European team out in the future given their rich history in the biennial showpiece.

However, the quartet’s switch to the Saudi-backed league has thrown that prospect into doubt, especially after Henrik Stenson was removed as his role of Captain following his move to LIV Golf last year.

There’s also the small matter that Poulter and his fellow LIV Golf comrades could be banned from playing DP World Tour events in the very near future.

Last year they won a stay of the suspensions and fines levied against them by the DP World Tour, allowing them to compete in events, but a five-day long session was held in court last month to determine the outcome of that case, with a decision expected within the next few weeks.

If unsuccessful, LIV Golf players seem highly unlikely to ever play a part in the Ryder Cup ever again, with the DP World Tour responsible for staging the Ryder Cup in Europe.

Poulter was asked on Instagram if he thinks LIV Golf will last, with the fan saying they were “gutted” that the seven-time Ryder Cupper probably won’t get a chance to captain Europe.

“LIV Golf League is here to stay it’s only 30 rounds old,” wrote Poulter.

“And every start up business takes time. I’m so proud to see how far it’s come in such a short space of time. It’s an incredible business and product and it will be incredible.

“And if the DP World Tour choose to not have any LIV golfer as captain after they have supported them and still do for over 25 years then shame on them. Sad but that’s on them.

“Time will tell and once all the info is out things will change I’m sure.”
