Fleetwood Honoured for Ryder Cup Spirit

Tommy Fleetwood’s heroic performance at Bethpage Black has earned him the prestigious Nicklaus–Jacklin Award presented by Aon, recognising the Team Europe star as the player who best embodied the spirit of the Ryder Cup through integrity, sportsmanship and smart decision-making.

Four-Point Hero in New York

Fleetwood was one of Europe’s standout performers in their historic 15–13 victory on American soil – the first since 2012 – posting an impressive 4–1–0 record.

Teaming up with Rory McIlroy, the pair proved unstoppable in foursomes, notching decisive wins over Collin Morikawa and Harris English. Fleetwood also joined forces with Justin Rose to deliver two crucial fourball points, including a 3 and 2 win against Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau.

The Englishman’s week boosted his career Ryder Cup record to 7–3–2, the best winning percentage among European players with at least 10 matches played.

Grace Under Fire

Beyond the numbers, Fleetwood impressed with the way he handled the intense New York atmosphere. In the cauldron of Bethpage Black, he was a calming presence for Team Europe—measured, composed and relentlessly positive. His leadership and demeanour in key moments underlined why he’s become such a trusted figure in the team room.

Reflecting on receiving the award, Fleetwood said:

“When you play in a team event like this you don’t set out to win individual awards, but to focus on playing the right way and making the right decisions when it matters most. To be acknowledged like this, with an award named after legends like Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin, is very cool. Sportsmanship is so important to our game, especially in the Ryder Cup environment. Luke Donald has instilled an amazing attitude in the team—that we should always play with the right spirit—and that has really helped us get over the line.”

An Award Rooted in Tradition

The Nicklaus–Jacklin Award was launched in 2021, inspired by Jack Nicklaus’s famous concession to Tony Jacklin at the 1969 Ryder Cup that secured the first tie in the event’s history. Fleetwood becomes the fourth recipient, joining Sergio Garcia (2021), Dustin Johnson (2021) and Justin Rose (2023).

Fleetwood’s recognition adds another layer to a thrilling Ryder Cup that delivered drama, emotion and moments of pure class—reminding the world why this competition remains one of golf’s greatest stages.
