DeChambeau PGA Tour Return: Why Dubai Could Be the Key

With LIV Golf winding down, golf’s biggest showman is a free agent. The fastest route back to the PGA Tour may run through the Emirates Golf Club.

For four years Bryson DeChambeau was LIV Golf’s loudest ambassador. This week, the league he championed effectively ceased to exist. On 5 November, LIV’s lawyers told a US bankruptcy court in New Jersey that the planned “LIV 2.0” relaunch would not go ahead in 2027. That followed a Chapter 11 filing in September and the Public Investment Fund’s decision in April to stop funding the league after this season.

DeChambeau never signed up for the relaunch, and the bankruptcy court has approved the rejection of his original contract, which ran through 2026. For the first time since 2022, the two-time US Open champion is a genuine free agent. The question is where he goes next.

The PGA Tour door is ajar, not open

The quick route has already closed. In January, DeChambeau turned down the PGA Tour’s Returning Member Program – the one-off offer Brooks Koepka accepted – and that window shut on 2 February. Tour commissioner Brian Rolapp has said there are no plans to revive it.

That leaves the standard route. Players who competed on LIV face a one-year suspension measured from their last LIV start. For DeChambeau, that would expire on 23 August 2027, provided he plays no further LIV events. In practice, most observers expect a 2028 return, when the Tour launches its new Championship Series. His 2024 US Open title carries a five-year exemption through 2029, so his status will be waiting once the ban is served.

The majors are not an issue either. That same US Open win keeps him exempt for the other three majors through 2029 and for the US Open itself until 2034.

Europe offers a ready-made bridge

The real problem is 2027. Four majors make for a thin schedule, and DeChambeau, now ranked 38th in the world, needs competitive rounds.

This is where the DP World Tour comes in. According to The Telegraph and Bunkered, DeChambeau has been offered full Category 1 membership for 2027 on the strength of his 2024 major win – no Q-School and no reliance on sponsor invitations. He is reportedly the only former LIV player without membership who holds that exemption. Applications close on 16 November.

There is a further incentive. Reports suggest a top-10 finish in the Race to Dubai could earn him a PGA Tour card for the following season, giving him a second route back alongside his US Open exemption. He has already entered the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City (3–6 December), his first regular DP World Tour start in almost six years.

Why Dubai makes sense

If DeChambeau commits to Europe, the Hero Dubai Desert Classic (21–24 January 2027) looks like an obvious early stop.

The history. In 2019 he took the Majlis course apart, closing with a 64 to win by seven shots at 24 under – still the tournament record and his first victory outside the United States. He went on to finish fourth in that season’s Race to Dubai.

The stakes. The Desert Classic is a Rolex Series event with a $9 million prize fund, one of the richest stops on the European calendar. A strong week would get his Race to Dubai campaign off to a flying start.

The stage. Back-to-back Masters champion Rory McIlroy has already confirmed his place in the field. A DeChambeau–McIlroy pairing in January would be the biggest story in golf, and with around 2.7 million YouTube subscribers, DeChambeau understands the value of a big stage better than anyone.

Nothing is confirmed yet. But if DeChambeau signs his DP World Tour forms before the 16 November deadline, expect Dubai to come calling – and don’t be surprised if he answers.
