Branden Grace puts new driver in the bag for Abu Dhabi

Last week’s South African Open winner Branden Grace will tee it up with a new key component in the bag when play gets underway at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship tomorrow after revealing he’s ready to go with Callaway’s new Mavrik driver.

“I love it, it’s one of those clubs that’s really easy to adapt to and put in the bag,” smiled Grace, who shot a final round 62 to win in Johannesburg last week. “There’s so many different options and I’ve gone with the sub-zero 9° model.

“It has a little bit more of a deeper face which I like, and I like the way the head looks as a result – it looks a bit smaller.

“It’s sometimes hard to switch drivers because this is the club that you need to get used to the most but I’ve done a lot of testing with it and I think now it’s just a case of finding the right shaft because the lie, lofts and weights are all spot on for me. When I get the right shaft, it’s going to be a good club.”

Branden Grace wins the 2020 South Arican Open Championship.

The win was Grace’s first since the 2017 NedBank Golf Challenge and it was a memorable one for the proud South African.

“To win our National Open is amazing and a dream come true,” he said. “It doesn’t matter which nationality you are, to win your own National Open is very special, especially in front of your home fans and friends and family.

“For me, it was extra special because I had my wife and my son there and it was the first time my son had seen me win an event, so that was amazing.”
