Local talent Dutton credits DP World Tour winner for Yas Links Open triumph

Dubai-based youngster Marcus Dutton revealed Tom Lewis gave him advice in the build up to his victory at the 2023 Yas Links Abu Dhabi Mens Open.

Dutton, 21, won the prestigious tournament by six shots after shooting an impressive four under par round on the links course.

The Englishman explained Lewis – a former top 50 player in the world – gave him crucial swing advice just weeks before the triumph.

“I saw him in Saudi where I spent a week for the Asian Tour event,” said Dutton. “We were talking about our swings. He’s kind of had some struggles as well.

“He was like ‘send me a few videos and I’ll take a look’. So I sent him my videos from last winter when I was hitting it well.

“He just showed me my posture. He just said I can’t get it on plane and up if I’m so steep. So he wanted me to sit back a little bit and stand a little bit taller with my head.

“Straight away when I got back (from Saudi) I played 18 holes with my friends and hit it a million times better.

“I could just get through the ball so much easier. That set me up to do what I was doing in the winter even better and get back to what I knew worked.”

Dutton is hoping to continue this success towards the close of the UAE season with several important events coming up.

He revealed he’s set to tee it up at the upcoming ADGC Men’s Open as well as the JGE Men’s Amateur Open where World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points are both available.

“It’s actually really important,” said Dutton of the opportunity to get a WAGR. “It’s so rare to have a WAGR event in the UAE.

“Hopefully I can get a ranking by the end of season because it will help me a lot if I do plan to play in Europe and the UK this summer.”
