Egypt Brings Golf Back to the World Stage

Egypt is making a bold play to re-establish itself on the international golf scene. Over the coming months, the country will roll out a series of flagship tournaments designed to reignite its historic golfing legacy and attract global attention.

Heritage Meets Ambition at the Pyramids

Speaking at the iconic Mena House course beneath the Pyramids of Giza, Egyptian Golf Federation President Omar Hisham described the new initiative as a decisive step towards “restoring Egypt’s place at the heart of world golf.”

“Golf in Egypt goes back more than a century,” Hisham said. “Announcing these events here, at a site that embodies heritage and tradition, shows how deep our legacy runs.”

To set the stage, the new calendar begins with the 104th Egyptian Men’s Amateur Open at Dreamland Golf Club. This will run alongside the Egyptian Open for Juniors and Amateur Ladies at New Giza, further underscoring the Federation’s commitment to developing youth and women’s golf.

The Egyptian Open Returns After 15 Years

The highlight of the schedule is the return of the Egyptian Open, one of the oldest national opens outside Europe. After a 15-year absence, the tournament will be revived as part of the Asian Development Tour, offering a $125,000 purse and reaffirming Egypt’s ambition to host elite international competition.

Furthermore, a brand-new international tournament will join the Asian Tour schedule, bringing a world-class field back to Egyptian fairways and enhancing the country’s reputation as a competitive golfing destination.

In recent years, Egypt has already seen positive momentum. Hisham pointed to a 25% increase in domestic player numbers and the successful staging of the Arab Junior and Ladies Championship at Madinaty Club, which was broadcast globally. He credited this progress to strong support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as well as strategic partnerships with the Arab Golf Federation and the Asian Tour.

Golf Tourism and Olympic Goals

Beyond elite competition, Egypt is also leveraging its golf tourism potential to strengthen its international profile. “Egypt has an unmatched advantage when it comes to golf tourism – championship courses, year-round sunshine, and world heritage sites,” Hisham explained.

Looking ahead, the Federation’s long-term goal is to elevate Egyptian players onto the world stage, with Olympic participation firmly in their sights.

“Every international event we host gives our players vital experience and ranking points,” Hisham added. “We want Egypt to have a strong and lasting presence on the world golf map.”
