Toby Bishop’s rich vein of form continued this weekend in the Trump Dubai Club Championship where he shot 68 in the first round to lead the tournament by three over Craig Vance going into the final round. However, the tournament was postponed because the General Authority of Sports released an official notice via the Emirates Golf Federation that children under 18, like Bishop, could not participate in golf events due to the COVID-19.
The ‘Welsh_Golfer’ as he’s known on Instagram, broke the course record in the Saadiyat Men’s Open when he shot a 62 to help him seal the title and then triumphed in The Els Alliance against a strong field that contained the likes of European Tour professional Gavin Moynihan.
There’s no doubt the 16 year old is in the best form of his career and he’ll be frustrated that tournaments are being postponed but he’ll be working hard at the Claude Harmon Performance Academy to keep his game ticking over.
The Trump Dubai Club Championship will be rearranged for later in the year when players of all ages can compete to see who is crowned the best male and female golfer at the club in the flagship event of the memership calendar.
There is a UAE PGA event that starts today (Sunday 15 March) at Abu Dhabi Golf Club which is the third last event of the season. Let’s hope the tournament runs smoothly and isn’t cancelled but the UAE PGA seem confident that the event will be a success. They stated on their Instagram: “As our events are very small we can continue in the midst of the virus as the safest place out there is playing golf.”
