Thorbjorn Olesen seals final automatic Ryder Cup spot

Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen will make his Ryder Cup debut this month as Matt Fitzpatrick came up short in his last-ditch bid qualify automatically for the team at the Made in Denmark event.

To overtake Olesen in the rankings, Fitzpatrick needed a victory in Denmark but could not do so despite back-to-back rounds of 66 over the weekend at Silkeborg Ry Golf Club.

Olesen expressed his relief after securing the last automatic spot.

“Relief is my first emotion, that’s for sure,” he said. “It’s been a tough week, a long week, a lot of things on my mind. It’s been difficult but it’s been great to learn that different kind of pressure.

“I think I handled it pretty well. There were a couple of things that could have been better but it was a tough week and I feel pretty happy now.

“To secure my place in the Ryder Cup team in Denmark is special. I am positive that the group will do their best to make feel more comfortable. I am very proud of this achievement and I want to help the team as much as I can.”

The 28-year-old joins Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Alex Noren, Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood on the team to face the United States at Le Golf National on September 28-30.

Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn will announce his four wild card picks on Wednesday (Sept 5th)  to round out the 12-man team.
