HERO DUBAI DESERT CLASSIC EARNS GEO STATUS FOR FOURTH YEAR

The Hero Dubai Desert Classic has achieved GEO Certified® Tournament status for the fourth consecutive year, further cementing its reputation as one of the most sustainable golf tournaments in the world and a leader in environmental responsibility across professional golf.

The prestigious tournament remains the first GEO Certified® event in the Middle East and is now the first tournament within the DP World Tour’s Rolex Series to maintain GEO Certified® status across four successive editions.

The announcement coincides with World Environment Day, which this year highlights the importance of practical, measurable action to address global environmental challenges.

Leading Sustainability in Professional Golf

GEO Certified® is the internationally recognised standard for sustainable golf tournaments, administered by the GEO Sustainable Golf Foundation. The independent certification process evaluates environmental performance, tournament operations, communications, community impact and long-term legacy planning while encouraging continual improvement.

The 2026 certification recognises another year of significant progress by the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, building on existing initiatives while further reducing environmental impact and enhancing positive social outcomes.

Key Sustainability Initiatives

Initiatives recognised during the verification process included:

  • The Green Incubator Challenge, a global competition designed to identify innovative sustainability solutions for major sporting events, with the winning concept set to be implemented at the 2027 Hero Dubai Desert Classic.
  • Continued use of renewable and alternative energy sources, with tournament operations powered through a combination of solar energy and biodiesel.
  • Reduced reliance on traditional diesel generators through battery storage and advanced energy management technologies.
  • Expanded sustainable procurement policies and responsible sourcing of materials.
  • Achievement of 100% waste diversion through comprehensive recycling and energy recovery programmes.
  • Promotion of public transport, including the Dubai Metro, alongside lower-carbon travel options for spectators, staff and suppliers.
  • Community engagement programmes supporting health, wellbeing, education and increased participation in golf.

The tournament continues to work closely with Emirates Golf Club, Dubai Golf, sponsors, suppliers and delivery partners to embed sustainability principles throughout event planning and operations.

Commitment to Continuous Improvement

Simon Corkill, Executive Tournament Director of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, said:

“Achieving GEO Certified® Tournament status for a fourth consecutive year is a significant achievement and reflects the commitment of everyone involved in delivering the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.”

“Sustainability remains central to our planning and decision-making. While we are proud of the progress made over the past four years, our focus remains on continual improvement and identifying new opportunities to reduce environmental impacts, create positive social outcomes and leave a meaningful legacy through the tournament.”

“We are grateful to our partners, suppliers, stakeholders and spectators for their support in helping us achieve this important recognition.”

Setting the Standard for Sustainable Golf Events

The independent verification highlighted the tournament’s leadership in sustainability communications, stakeholder engagement, responsible resource management and collaborative legacy programmes.

Jonathan Smith, Founder and Executive Director of GEO Sustainable Golf Foundation, said:

“The Hero Dubai Desert Classic continues to demonstrate what can be achieved when sustainability is integrated into every aspect of event planning and delivery.”

“The commitment shown by Falcon and Associates, Emirates Golf Club and their partners has helped establish the tournament as one of the most progressive events in professional golf from a sustainability perspective.”

“We congratulate the entire team on achieving GEO Certified® Tournament status once again and look forward to supporting their continued progress in the years ahead.”

A Sustainable Future for Golf in Dubai

The Hero Dubai Desert Classic’s continued GEO Certified® status reflects Dubai’s wider commitment to sustainability, innovation and responsible development, while showcasing how major sporting events can deliver lasting environmental and community benefits.
