McIlroy edges closer to Dubai double

He’s already done it twice, but Rory McIlroy is eager to complete the Dubai double for a third time following the final round of the DP World Tour Championship.

The Dubai double is of course winning both the season-long Race to Dubai title and the season-ending DP World Tour Championship at the same time.

And McIlory finds himself in position to do just that after a third round 68 saw him end the day tied at the top of the leaderboard with Rasmus Højgaard and Antoine Rozner after a dramatic third round on the Earth course.

A sixth Harry Vardon Trophy is essentially already wrapped up for the Northern Irishman, with the only man who catch him at the top of the Rankings, Thriston Lawrence, needing a victory, while that won’t even be enough if McIlroy finishes inside the top ten.

The South African is currently eight shots off the pace in a tie for 17th.

That leaves tomorrow’s final round as the only thing standing his way of picking up both the season-long and season-ending trophies at the same time for the first time since 2015.

“I’ve been able to do it twice before,” said McIlroy after his round.

“So yeah, to do it again would be great. I’ve been really proud of my consistency, especially on this tour, just European Tour events, Rolex Series Events, doesn’t feel like I’ve finished outside the top five in many of them this year.

“It would be a great way to finish the year.”

As well as Rozner and Højgaard, McIlroy will also face challenges from the likes of Joaquin Niemann and Jesper Svensson, who are two shots off the lead, and LIV Golf’s Tyrrell Hatton, who is a shot further back.
