Tiger Woods gets exemption lifeline from PGA TOUR

Tiger Woods has been granted access to all Signature Events next season after the PGA Tour Policy Board sanctioned a new “Lifetime Achievement exemption category” specifically designed for the 15 time Major champion.

Signature Series

The eight Signature Events, notable for their substantial prize money and select fields, have stirred much debate in the first season of the PGA Tour’s revamped schedule. Among the controversies has been the criteria determining which players are eligible to compete in these premier tournaments.

Sponsors delighted

Tournament sponsors traditionally have four exemptions to allocate to PGA Tour members, often awarded to a familiar roster of players. However, with the Travelers Championship this week marking the season’s final Signature Event, significant adjustments are anticipated for the forthcoming year. Foremost among these is the special exemption for Woods, effective from 2025.

It’s not about the money

Woods’ extraordinary career is unrivalled, with 82 career victories and over $150 million in lifetime earnings. The Policy Board’s new exemption seeks to honour and recognise these monumental achievements.

Contribution

Although tournament sponsors have rarely declined Woods’ participation, his automatic qualification was not assured due to limited play and less competitive scores in recent years. Consequently, Woods has previously relied on sponsor exemptions to compete. The new exemption ensures his presence in all eight Signature Events, celebrating his legacy and contributions to the sport.

Protecting the legacy

Woods might be one of the most iconic players in the history of the sport and to have exemption for these prime events is justified as along as he’s still able to compete. It would be heart breaking to see Tiger miss cuts and tarnish a legendary career that brought golf to the masses.
