Members prevent Rory McIlory’s return to the PGA Tour’s policy board.

Rory McIlroy announced he will not be returning to the PGA Tour’s policy board, citing discomfort among certain board members about his potential reinstatement. Last year, McIlroy had stepped down from the board but had expressed his readiness to return and take Webb Simpson’s place, with Simpson offering to resign from his role as one of the player directors.

However, McIlroy revealed that discussions around his return became “complicated and messy,” leading to the decision that Simpson would remain on the board for the remainder of his term. McIlroy acknowledged that reopening these discussions had stirred up past issues among some board members.

“If there are people on the board who are uncomfortable with my return, then I think Webb should stay on and complete his term,” McIlroy explained to reporters. “I volunteered to help, and although it wasn’t a rejection, the process to reinstate me became complex. There are no hard feelings, and we will all move forward.”

McIlroy had hoped to contribute to negotiations between the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour following their agreement to merge and create a unified golf entity. Despite ongoing negotiations, McIlroy expressed impatience but emphasized the importance of seizing the opportunity to revitalize the game.

“I believe there is a critical window to get this merger completed,” McIlroy stated. “While it may not be ideal for either side, reigniting the game of golf and bringing everyone together would be a positive outcome.”
