Korn Ferry Tour star ties world record with round of 57

Chile’s Cristobal Del Solar set a new record on Thursday with a 13-under 57 in the Korn Ferry’s Astara Golf Championship, the lowest round in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event and matching the record on tours that are part of the Official World Golf ranking.

The 30-year-old, currently ranked 259th in the world, delivered a masterful performance on Bogota Country Club’s Pacos course, ending with a stunning score of 57 despite closing his final three holes with pars.

His round featured two eagles, one notably achieved on the 330-yard ninth hole, propelling him to an eight-under 27 on the outward nine and equalling the Korn Ferry Tour’s nine-hole record.

“It was a very short course, I mean really short,” Del Solar said after his round. “A lot of holes were drivable; I wouldn’t say drivable, but within 20 yards of the green. I wouldn’t necessarily get on the green, but I was around it. The course was definitely set up to shoot a low score.

“Now, when you go onto a course like this, you don’t think, ‘I’m going to shoot 57.’ You just go out there and do your best and hope it’s a really low score. You’ve still got to do it, obviously.”

Del Solar’s achievement was buoyed by favourable conditions. The Pacos course, measuring just 6,254 yards and situated approximately 8,500 feet above sea level, afforded players increased distance on their shots. Furthermore, recent rainy weather meant players were permitted to lift, clean and place golf balls under preferred lie rule.

In breaking the previous Korn Ferry record of 58, held by Stephan Jäger since the 2016 Ellie Mae Classic, Del Solar joined an elite group of golfers. Irishman David Carey was the first player to ever shoot 57, a score he carded at the 2019 Cervino Open on the Alps Tour.

By achieving a sub-60 round, Del Solar became the 53rd player across various tours worldwide—including the LPGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions, and LIV Golf—to accomplish such a feat since Al Geiberger’s historic 59 in the 1977 Memphis Classic.

The only player to shoot a sub-60 round on the DP World Tour is Oliver Fisher, who carded a stunning 59 at the 2018 Portugal Masters.
