Toby Bishop tops U.S. Open Local Qualifying

Former Dubai resident Toby Bishop has edged one step closer to a first Major Championship start after the Welshman came out on top of U.S. Open Local Qualifying on the Mark Bostick Golf Course at The University of Florida.

The 2021-2022 EGF Order of Merit champion, who joined the University of Florida last year, carded a bogey-free five under par 65 to claim top spot alongside fellow ‘Gators’ Fred Biondi and Parker Bell to secure one of the 530 spots in Final Qualifying, which will occur at 13 sites across late May and early June.

Final Qualifying is played over 36 holes in a single day, and roughly the top 7.5% advance to the U.S. Open. The exact number of players to advance from each site is determined by the number of players and the strength of each site’s field. In 2022, 65 out of 871 players qualified for the U.S. Open at The Country Club.

Bishop could come up against the likes of Ludvig Aberg, No. 1 on the PGA TOUR University Ranking, Raymond Floyd Jr, son of accomplished Tour pro Raymond Floyd, and Cameron Kuchar, the teenage son of nine-time PGA Tour winner Matt Kuchar, in the final stage with the trio all advancing from Local Qualifying.

Thus far only 52 golfers have earned exemptions all the way to Los Angeles Country Club, including defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick. The number of fully exempt players will increase with the inclusion of the top-60 point leaders and ties from the World Ranking, as of May 22 and June 5.
