Thomas Pieters: Joining LIV Golf ‘too good to be true’

Thomas Pieters said joining LIV Golf was a “too good to be true” following his recent switch to the Saudi-backed circuit.

The Belgian has been a regular on the DP World Tour for a number of years, winning six titles in Europe since turning pro in 2013.

The 31-year-old also starred in the 2016 Ryder Cup as Europe’s top point scorer claiming four from a possible five points.

However, the big-hitter recently decided to join LIV Golf insisting he couldn’t turn down the opportunity.

“I never wanted to play full time in America and this was too good to be true, to come over to LIV,” said Pieters. “So I did.”

A key part of LIV Golf is the team aspect with 12 teams of 48 players participating every event.

Pieters has linked up with Americans Bubba Watson, Harold Varner III and Talor Gooch as part of RangeGoats GC.

But it’s not the first time the Belgian has participated in team golf this season.

Earlier this year, he was part of Francesco Molinari’s winning Continental Europe side at the Hero Cup.

The event in Abu Dhabi was an attempt to build some team atmosphere and bonding ahead of this year’s Ryder Cup.

However, the likelihood of Pieters now playing in Rome this September remains in serious doubt due to his decision to join the rebel golf tour.
